US envoy nominee sees elections as test for democracy in Armenia

WASHINGTON D.C. – John Heffern, nominee for the post of US ambassador to Armenia, has reportedly said crucial elections in 2012 and 2013 are a good opportunity for the Armenian government to demonstrate its commitment to democratic development.

Heffern’s statement came during hearings on his candidacy in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, the US legislature’s lower chamber, Armenia’s Mediamax news agency reported.

Regarding the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, Heffern said US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are "deeply involved" and remain committed to peace talks brokered by the OSCE Minsk Group to find a lasting, peaceful and fair solution of the long-standing conflict.

Mediators from the United States, Russia and France have led negotiations on Karabakh settlement since Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war, but little progress has been made in the peace process so far.
