Lukashenko blames journalists for economic crisis

MINSK – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko accused journalists Friday of using that "trash called the Internet" to trigger the worst economic crisis of his 17 years in power, AFP reported.

Lukashenko used a rare public press conference to blame journalists for fomenting fear that resulted in a run on the country's currency and outside forces for using "trash called the Internet" to disseminate misinformation.

"Journalists played the biggest role in creating panic," he said, darkly warning that representatives of some such media were present at his news conference.

"We have been going our own path, and we will continue following it," said Lukashenko.

Lashing out at Western powers, he added: "They are already standing around our periphery and snapping their teeth, waiting for us to fall."
