Armenia says ready to mend Turkey ties ‘without pre-conditions’
YEREVAN – Armenia is ready to normalize its relations with Turkey without pre-conditions, Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan has told the BBC’s Russian service.
"We hope Turkey will act logically," he said. "I am talking about the protocols signed in order to normalize relations between the two neighbors. And if our Turkish counterparts arrive at the conclusion that it is meaningless to have closed borders in the 21st century, we will be delighted."
Turkey and Armenia have been at odds for decades due to Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijani territory and Armenian claims on 1915 "genocide". The reconciliation agreements, signed by Ankara and Yerevan in October 2009, seek to establish diplomatic relations and reopen the two countries’ sealed borders. However, Turkey has assured Azerbaijan, its ally, that the protocols will not be ratified until progress is made in resolving the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh. In response, Armenia suspended parliamentary approval of the protocols in April 2010.
