Monument to Armenian nationalist known for massacres demolished in Russia
YEREVAN – The monument to an Armenian Dashnak (nationalist) who committed mass killings in northeastern Turkey in the early 20th century and was closely involved in further killings of tens of thousands of innocent Azerbaijanis has been demolished in Russia, Armenian media reported.
The monument to Gen. Andranik Ozanyan had been erected in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi just a few days ago. It was due to be unveiled on May 27, Armenia’s independence day, but was taken down on that very day.
The local Armenian community claims that the demolition resulted from Azerbaijan and Turkey’s pressure on Sochi authorities.
