Ahmadinejad to discuss ties, economic co-op in Armenia - report

TEHRAN – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due to visit Armenia on June 6-7 to discuss with President Serzh Sargsyan ways of deepening bilateral relations and economic cooperation, Fars news agency reported.

Economic and trade ties between the two countries were discussed at a meeting of the inter-governmental commission which drew to a close in Tehran on Monday. The Iranian and Armenian governments signed an agreement on cooperation in fields including energy, trade and industries. The agreement was signed by Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and Armenian Energy Minister Armen Movsisyan.

Salehi said bilateral trade turnover rose 38 percent in 2010 and there was potential to increase the figure further.

He also said Armenia has a unique location, with access to the Black Sea on one hand and to the corridor between Iran and the Persian Gulf on the other, and could therefore play the role of a transport hub.

During the talks the sides also discussed construction of the Julfa-Sisyan railway line that will link the two countries. Iranian Railroad official Reza Pilpayeh said the project is estimated at around $2.5 billion and the key goal was currently to find investors for it.
