Armenian opposition figure released from jail under amnesty
YEREVAN – A prominent Armenian opposition figure jailed for his role in the 2008 postelection unrest has been released from prison under an amnesty approved by the parliament on Thursday, Radio Liberty's Armenian Service reports.
Sasun Mikaelian, a former member of parliament, was serving an eight-year jail sentence on charges of organizing mass disturbances after the disputed February 2008 election. He was also found guilty of illegal arms possession.
Mikaelian denied all the charges and called the case against him politically motivated.
The amnesty paves the way for the release of some 400 prisoners, including four opposition activists jailed in the wake of the 2008 protests.
