80,000 left Armenia in three years: govt

YEREVAN – About 80,000 people have left Armenia in the past three years, the country’s immigration authorities estimate.

23,000 of them left in 2008, 25,000 in 2009 and 30,000 in 2010, Gagik Yeganyan, head of Armenia’s State Migration Service, said early this week.

65 percent of the people went to Russia, 10 percent to the United States and Europe each and 5 percent to former Soviet republics, according to the State Migration Service.

Armenian lawmaker Viktor Dallakyan said Armenia faces dire poverty. He said that in Yerevan, the country’s wealthiest city, 88 percent of the people barely make ends meet, with only 1.1 percent having acceptable standard of living.
