Israeli parliament plans to recognize ‘Armenian genocide’ - report

YEREVAN – Israeli lawmakers have decided to discuss and draft a first-ever resolution on the alleged World War I-era genocide of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey, Armenia Today news agency reported.

The issue was reportedly raised by Zehava Gal-On of the leftist Meretz party at a meeting of senior Knesset members on Wednesday. 20 members of the legislature’s steering board unanimously voted to send the draft resolution to the parliamentary commission on education.

The Armenian community has sought passage of a resolution on the "genocide" in the Israeli parliament every year, but its efforts have been failing so far.

According to historians, from 1915 to 1923, Armenians began an uprising, taking up arms against Turkey, and assisted Russia, one of Turkey’s enemies in WWI. To counter these actions, the Ottoman Empire decided to resettle the Armenians. However, the latter claim that their predecessors suffered "genocide" in the process. Ankara dismisses the claims and has repeatedly offered to research the events through a joint commission of historians.
