10 militants killed in Russia`s south
MOSCOW – Police says a militant leader and his gang of nine have been killed in a police operation in a Russian region neighboring the restive North Caucasus, AP reported.
Southern Federal District Police spokesman Sergey Morozov said Friday that Asker Dzhappuev, the militant leader of the neighboring Kabardino-Balkariya, and nine other suspected militants were killed at a village house where they were hiding out in the Stavropol region.
The men were killed during an assault on their house after they refused to give in.
The Stavropol region borders Russia's volative Caucasian provinces, which have been destabilized by an Islamic insurgency that has spread across the region following two separatist wars in Chechnya.
