Lithuania seeks to advance solution of conflicts during leader’s S Caucasus visit
VILNIUS – OSCE chair Lithuania attaches great importance to President Dalia Grybauskaite’s upcoming visit to the South Caucasus region and will seek to advance settlement of the regional countries’ long-standing conflicts, the president’s spokesman was quoted by local media as saying.
Linas Balsys said "a very interesting, serious and substantial visit" will be paid next week to Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia by the Lithuanian leader and the accompanying delegation.
President Grybauskaite’s visit to Azerbaijan is due on May 2-3.
According to Balsys, the president’s visit to the Caucasus is important given that OSCE chair Lithuania has outlined resolving "frozen" conflicts as one of its top priorities.
"We expect this visit to invigorate the dialog on resolution of South Caucasus conflicts," he said.
On the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, the president’s spokesman called on the parties to continue holding peace talks.
"During the visit to Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia, which are facing a difficult political situation, the president will work to launch dialog and foster cooperation between the political leaders and citizens in these countries," Balsys said.
