Armenian protesters urge Obama to recognize ‘genocide’
LOS ANGELES – Scores of Armenians have taken to the streets in Los Angeles, calling for US recognition of the alleged mass killings in Ottoman Turkey as "genocide".
Serzh Tankyan, a rights group activist, called on protesters to chant Barack Obama’s campaign pledge in 2008 to recognize the "genocide" if elected president.
Tankyan said the protest, organized by the Armenian National Committee of America, aimed not only to remind Obama of his promise, but also "to demonstrate unhappiness" of the public with his alleged failure to deliver on it.
Armenians residing in Turkey’s Anatolia region staged riots during World War I and fought against the Ottoman army in support of Russia. In an effort to end stand-off, the Ottoman government decided in 1915 to resettle the Armenians to other parts of the country. Armenians say 1.5 million of their ancestors were killed in the process, a claim dismissed by Turkey, and have been trying to muster international support for their claims worldwide.
