U.S. to back opposition leader at Armenia election: paper
YEREVAN – The United States will support the leader of the opposition Heritage party at Armenia’s presidential election in 2013, the local 168 Jam (168 Hours) newspaper claimed.
The report also said that Raffi Ovannisian’s earlier hunger strike at Yerevan's Liberty Square was inspired by and began immediately after US ambassador to Armenia Marie Yovanovitch made statements critical of the government.
Some in the Armenian ruling elite are also reportedly concerned that Washington could throw its weight behind the opposition leader at the 2013 elections.
