Unknown people color Turkish-Armenian ‘friendship monument’
ANKARA – Unknown people have colored a monument symbolizing Turkish-Armenian "friendship" in Kars, Turkey, with three different colors, Turkey’s Ihlas news agency reported.
Local residents said the "Monument of Humanity" was colored either in protest against its planned removal or it was painted only to draw attention to it.
Kars municipality passed a decision on February 1 to demolish the "Monument of Humanity", whose construction started in 2008 as a symbol of the so-called Turkish-Armenian friendship, but has not been completed yet. While on a visit to Kars, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said all "strange constructions" contradicting the historic-architectural style should be removed, calling the monument "ugly".
Turkey and Armenia have been at odds for decades and their shared border has been shut since 1993 due to Armenia’s occupation of the territory of Azerbaijan, Turkey’s ally, and Armenian claims on a 1915 "genocide".
