NATO chief to visit Turkey next week
ANKARA – NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen will visit Turkey on Monday in the wake of the trans-Atlantic alliance assuming command of the campaign against Libya, Hurriyet reported.
Once-reluctant Turkey is now gearing up to play a critical role in NATO operations in Libya, which will have their command center at the alliance’s air base in the Aegean province of İzmir. Turkey has already contributed five warships and a submarine to the international operation in Libya; the vessels are to be used solely for humanitarian and defense purposes.
In addition to the Libya operation, NATO’s strategic concept, including a missile defense shield, is expected to be discussed during the secretary-general’s talks in Ankara.
