Armenian to serve as Turkish envoy to France
ANKARA – An ethnic Armenian Turkish scholar will be appointed Turkey’s ambassador to France in the next two to three months, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said.
Davutoglu said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul have provided their consent for the appointment.
The minister did not name the ambassador, but Armenia’s Azg newspaper reported that the post will be taken by economist Daron Acemoglu.
Acemoglu, 43, was born in Istanbul. He graduated from the University of York London and has worked for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1993.
Armenia-Turkey relations have been marred by decades of hostility due to the Armenian occupation of the territory of Azerbaijan, Turkey’s ally, and Yerevan’s claims on the 1915 "genocide" in Ottoman Turkey.
