Armenian opposition leader goes on hunger strike

YEREVAN – The leader of Armenia`s opposition Zharangutyun (Heritage) party, Raffi Hovannisian, has vowed to go on hunger strike to protest the country`s government.

Hovannisian made the announcement after strongly criticizing the government in a speech delivered at a party congress.

He said that his action will be dedicated to defense of "freedom," but did not offer details.

In a statement issued later in the day, the party said the "indefinite" hunger strike would take place in Yerevan's Liberty Square.

It did not say what Hovannisian's demands are.

A former U.S. citizen, Hovannisian served Armenia's first foreign minister in 1992.
