Armenia ex-minister warns of Arab-like unrest replay

YEREVAN – Former Armenian foreign minister Vardan Oskanyan has said ``there is every sign`` for a replay in the country of the riots that have swept through the Arab countries.

Oskanyan told a press conference Monday that like in Arab nations, politicized monopolies, poverty, corruption and unemployment are rife in Armenia. He said the developments that have occurred in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya should be "an alarm signal" for the Armenian authorities.

Oskanyan's warning came a day ahead of a planned opposition demonstration to mark the third anniversary of postelection unrest that left 10 people dead.

Oskanyan said, however, that he does not want the turmoil in these countries to occur in his country, warning that the unrest would "set Armenia back ten years".
