Russia not to raise Armenia gas price as expected
MOSCOW – Russia will not raise the price of natural gas it sells to Armenia in 2011, despite Russian gas giant Gazprom’s earlier statement that it could rise, according to an agreement reached during talks between Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Serzh Sargsyan last Friday.
"We are satisfied with the outcomes of this meeting," Armenian president’s spokesman Armen Arzumanyan told reporters. "During the talks held in St. Petersburg, an agreement was reached on the tariff for transporting gas to Armenia. The price of gas for Armenian consumers will not increase during 2011."
Moreover, Moscow and Yerevan agreed that the gas price will be reduced for low-income consumers, Arzumanyan said.
Gazprom last September announced a switchover to market prices in its gas exports to Belarus, Moldova and Armenia, saying the price of gas imported by the three countries may increase this year.
Armenia’s government on April 1, 2010 raised domestic gas prices from 25 cents to 34 cents per cubic meter.
