U.S. vows further effort on Turkey-Armenia fence-mending

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States has said it will continue to make an effort to advance the stalled process of reconciling Turkey and Armenia, US Assistant Secretary of State Philip Crowley told a daily press briefing in Washington on Monday.

Asked what will be the next step the U.S. will take to revive the reconciliation process, he said the Secretary of State has been "fully engaged" in these efforts.

"We’ve understood for a number of months that there have been obstacles to progress. We will continue to engage Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and see how we can move forward," Crowley said.

Turkey and Armenia have been at odds for decades and their shared border has been shut since 1993 due to Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijani territory and Armenian claims on a 1915 "genocide". In late 2009, the two governments signed agreements to establish diplomatic relations and reopen their borders. However, Turkey has assured Azerbaijan, its ally, that the protocols will not be ratified until progress is made in resolving the long-standing Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. In response, Yerevan suspended parliamentary approval of the accords in April 2010.
