Turkish doctor arrested over illegal transplants
ISTANBUL – A Turkish doctor who was accused of illegal organ transplants in Kosovo and wanted by the Interpol has been detained in Istanbul.
Yusuf Ercin Sonmez, 53, who was implicated in illegal organ sales in Azerbaijan last August, was arrested along with six other persons, Turkish media reported.
The detainees are said to have deceived poor people in Moldova, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkey to arrange the sale of their body parts. The outlaws reportedly bought kidneys from the destitute for $20,000 and sold them in Canada, Germany, Poland and Israel for $100,000 to $137,000. The "organ mafia" sold the organs of some 20 people in 2008 alone, investigators say.
