France’s Armenians appropriating Georgian brands - reports
YEREVAN – Armenians in France are selling Georgia’s top brands as Armenian products, reports say.
According to the Georgians living in France, the popular Georgian wine Saperavi is on sale in local Russian-owned supermarkets as an expensive Armenian brand. Also, Georgian traditional sausage-shaped candy, Churchkhela, is being sold as "an Armenian miracle", while the Georgian national Tone Bread is being presented as Armenian bread. Georgian Khachapuri or "cheese bread", a filled bread dish, is being offered as a product called "khachaturiani".
These products are reportedly on sale in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Strasbourg and other cities.
Goods with distorted titles are on sale in the United States as well. For instance, popular sparkling water Borzhomi is being sold in the country as an Armenian product.
18 Georgian brands, including Saperavi, are protected by the law in European markets against forgery.
Georgia's patent office chief Irakli Gvaladze has told the press that the reports on the Armenian forgery of the country’s goods were under scrutiny, adding that this "was not the first time" national brands were being appropriated.
"Armenia has already made such attempts in the past. As for citing specific facts, we will try to check this information once again and express our attitude accordingly," Gvaladze said.
