Court orders vote recount in Moldova

CHISINAU – Moldova's Constitutional Court on Friday ordered a recount in the country's inconclusive national election after the Communist Party complained of "massive irregularities." AP reported.

After the ruling, authorities said they would recount all the ballots from the Nov. 28 election.

The Communists, led by former president Vladimir Voronin, alleged that some people voted more than once and that errors occurred in the counting. International and domestic observers have called the election fair and free.

The Communists won 42 legislative seats, and a three-party, pro-European alliance won 59, two short of the 61 needed to elect a new president. The inconclusive result has led to political tensions in Moldova, a former Soviet republic of 4.1 million people that is one of Europe's poorest countries.

Also Friday, European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek visited Moldova to pledge support for the country.

Buzek praised the pro-European alliance that has been in power since 2009 for steering Moldova toward EU integration, and urged the country to continue to follow this path.

The Communists want closer relations with Russia.
