New Armenian law allows to sign deals with rebel regions

YEREVAN – The Armenian parliament has passed legislation allowing the country to sign deals with unrecognized republics, Armenia Today news agency reported.

Ethnic Armenians are running a self-proclaimed republic in Nagorno Karabakh, an Azerbaijani region that has been under Armenian occupation along with seven other Azerbaijani districts since the two countries fought a lengthy war in the 1990s.

Deputy Foreign Minister Savarsh Kocharian, who submitted a bill on relevant amendments to Armenian laws, said the draft law envisions cooperation not only with Nagorno Karabakh but also other self-proclaimed republics.

He added that recognition of Nagorno Karabakh was on Armenia’s agenda, but "it is not time for this yet".
