10,000 military service dodgers are under search in Armenia
YEREVAN – 10,400 people who evaded military service are under search in Armenia, the minister for diaspora was quoted as saying.
Granush Akopyan said the government has offered to amend Armenia’s laws to address the problem. The proposed changes envision halting prosecution of mandatory military service dodgers who turned 27 before November 1, 2010 and instead imposing fines on citizens under that age unwilling to serve, the Russian defense ministry’s publication, Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper, quoted Akopyan as saying.
Fines in the amount of about $280 will be payable to the state during every draft. Those whose father or brother died while on duty or bread-winners will be exempt from the fines.
