YEREVAN – Armenia’s armed forces have lost 44 servicemen this year, with only seven of them killed in clashes on the contact line with Azerbaijani troops, a rights defender reported.

According to the Armenian defense ministry, 31 servicemen died while on duty last year.

"Through the years, so many undisclosed murders have piled up and remain unresolved that such deaths and inadequate response to them have become unbearable," said Arthur Sakunts, coordinator of the Helsinki Citizens Assembly Vanadzor office (HCAV). "Even increasing [public] interest cannot rescue the system that is pervaded with violations of law and corruption."

"So, even if we set aside the other seven incidents, has a single commander or officer been brought to book for 37 deaths?" Sakunts continued. "I demand resignation of the commander-in-chief, the minister of defense and the chief-of-staff."

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades.
