Putin calls to speed up ratification of economic union documents
MOSCOW – Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin called on the government on Wednesday to speed up the ratification of documents on the common economic space of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
Speaking at a government meeting, Putin recalled that there are agreements with Belarus that link the terms of document ratification to the use of customs duties on certain goods.
"If we manage to [ratify the documents] by January 1, 2011, this will be good," he said, adding that Russia will do everything possible to accelerate work on the documents.
The common economic space between the three countries is expected to ultimately result in the establishment of a single currency.
The Customs Union between the three ex-Soviet republics became fully operational in early July, when the countries ratified the Customs Code. The states plan to completely scrap their customs borders on July 1, 2011.
