Armenia’s former president takes swipe at int’l groups

YEREVAN – A former Armenian president has said the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Karabakh and the Turkey-Armenia normalization lie at the core of the world community’s "indifference" to human rights issues in Armenia.

Speaking at a rally in Yerevan on Tuesday, Levon Ter-Petrosian accused international organizations of failing to make an effort toward releasing political prisoners in Armenia. The opposition leader was quoted by the media as saying that the world community was thus luring the country to make concessions in Karabakh settlement and the process of normalizing its strained relations with Turkey.

"But the presence of corporate interests can’t be denied either, as the Council of Europe and the OSCE are rather ‘clubs’ of not countries but more of governments and government representatives. The delegations of the countries included in these organizations are comprised of officials."

Ter-Petrosian, who heads the opposition Armenian National Congress, believes that politicians, rights defenders and citizens should not condone what he called the prevalence of red tape practices in international organizations.
