Two soldiers found dead at Russia’s base in Armenia

26 October 2010 08:58 (UTC+04:00)

YEREVAN – Two ethnic Armenian Russian servicemen were found dead on Saturday at the Gyumri military base run by Russia in Armenia, Armenian media quoted the country’s law enforcement agencies as saying.

Open wounds and gashes were discovered on the dead bodies of the military men, aged 27 and 39, which were found in the rest lounge of the facility.

Russia was previously set to vacate the Gyumri base in 2020. However, an agreement signed in August updates the 1995 treaty, extending its military presence by 24 years until 2044, and also commits Russia to updating Armenia's military hardware and ensuring its security.
