U.S. says focused on Turkey-Armenia fence-mending

WASHINGTON D.C. – The United States remains committed to normalizing Turkey-Armenia relations, US Assistant Secretary of State Philip Crowley has said.

Crowley told a news briefing that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discussed the issue with a number of world leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last month.

Armenia and Turkey have been at odds for decades. The two governments signed accords in October 2009 to establish diplomatic relations and reopen their borders. However, the documents require parliamentary approval, and Ankara has ruled out normalization with Yerevan until the conflict between Armenia, which occupies part of Azerbaijani territory, and Azerbaijan, Turkey’s ally, has been resolved.
