Armenia, Turkey to set up airline, report claims

YEREVAN – Armenia and Turkey will soon establish a joint airline, Armenian media claimed.

Armenians will be able to fly to Turkey’s southeastern Van province, head of Van’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry Zahir Qandashoglu, was quoted by Tert.am news website as saying. The proposal has been made by an Armenia-based company which is not disclosed.

"Discussions are currently underway. The company will be called Eri-Van Airlines. Van’s tourism potential will be increased due to future flights," Qandashoglu was quoted as saying.

He added that another Armenian company was seeking to build a five-star hotel in Van, which could bring revenues worth $50 million to the region.

Earlier Qandashoglu reportedly said the would-be airline would have four proprietors, would buy two planes with the aid of a US company and would carry out Yerevan-Van charter flights.

Turkey and Armenia face historic enmity and their shared border has been shut since 1993 due to Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijani territory and Armenian claims on mass killings of their ancestors by Ottoman Turks.
