Gul congratulates Sargsyan on Independence Day - reports
ANKARA – Turkish President Abdullah Gul has congratulated his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan on the country’s Independence Day, Armenian media reported.
President Gul stressed the importance of resolving regional conflicts, saying this would promote friendly and good neighborliness ties.
Regarding the 2009 accords on normalizing Turkey’s relations with Armenia, Gul reportedly expressed hope that these agreements would further serve as a basis for bilateral relations.
Armenia and Turkey have been at odds for decades. The two protocols, signed in Switzerland in October 2009, require approval in both countries’ parliaments. Turkish officials have assured Azerbaijan, Turkey’s ally, that the protocols will not pass in the country’s parliament until progress is made in resolving the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.
