UN passes resolution on ‘frozen’ conflicts in ex-Soviet states
NEW-YORK – The United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution on "frozen" conflicts in the member states of GUAM, a group of four former Soviet republics, and their impact on international peace and security.
GUAM, established in 2001, comprises Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova.
The UN GA expressed concern over the violent change in demographic situation in the aftermath of conflicts in Georgia.
The resolution, passed in a 50-17 vote, with 86 Assembly members abstaining, recognizes the right of all refugees, regardless of their ethnic affiliation, to return to their homes in the South Caucasus republic, including its rebel South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions.
It also called for preventing appropriation of the displaced persons’ property.
