Armenian clerics refuse to attend church opening in Turkey

BAKU - Armenian clerical leaders have refused to attend the opening of a church in eastern Turkey, saying their decision was due to an alleged failure to allow putting a cross over the shrine.

The Turkish government allocated $1.5 million three years ago to restore the church, which is due to open on September 19.

After Armenian Catholicos Garegin II announced in August that he would delegate senior clerics to the ceremony, he came under criticism from the country’s political forces, and even the Armenian ruling party opposed his move.

Armenia and Turkey have been at odds for decades and maintain no diplomatic ties.
