US congressmen arrive in Georgia
TBILISI – The U.S.-Georgian relations and the political processes in the South Caucasus country will top the agenda of the U.S. congressional visit which kicked off on Monday.
During the visit, the delegation of U.S. congressmen led by Senator Jim Marshall is expected to meet with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, Parliamentary Speaker David Bakradze and other top officials.
The U.S.-Georgian ties, the political processes in Georgia, the U.S. support for economic reforms in the South Caucasus country, as well as Georgia's involvement in peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan will top the agenda of the talks with Georgian officials.
At the Tbilisi International Airport, Senator Marshall expressed his condolences to journalists over the recent death of a Georgian soldier in Afghanistan.
"I am from the state of Georgia," he said. "Many young people from this state were killed in Afghanistan. But one should be proud that we are combating terrorism."
The delegation also includes senators Jane Harman (California), Peter Welch (Vermont), Charles Dent (Pennsylvania) and Cynthia Loomis (Wyoming).
