Armenia: Defense pact with Russia ‘not response to Turkish-Azeri alliance’
YEREVAN – Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Savarsh Kocharian has said the Russian-Armenian deal extending Moscow’s rights to run its military base in Armenia signed last week was not aimed to counter the strengthening Turkey-Azerbaijan alliance.
"This is not a response, but another important stage in the development of natural relations," Kocharian said on the country’s public television channel.
The deputy minister noted that under the signed protocol, the Russian base will ensure Armenia’s security jointly with his country’s armed forces only within the former Soviet Union’s borders. He said this generally implies protecting Armenia against outside attacks.
