GUAM leaders may meet in late 2010

BAKU – The next summit of GUAM, a group of four former Soviet republics, may be held at the end of 2010, Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze was quoted by Russia’s Kommersant newspaper as saying.

Vashadze said GUAM members vigorously continue their activities.

"The member countries take an interest in implementing economic, energy and transport projects. This includes creating the Southern Energy Corridor, transit of Azerbaijan’s energy resources through Georgian territory and tourism projects."

According to Vashadze, a meeting of GUAM states’ foreign ministers is due on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session to be held in New York in September. The ministerial will determine the dates and agenda of the GUAM summit.

The last summit of GUAM leaders was held in the summer of 2007.

The organization was set up by Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova in 1997. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the group, but quit in 2003. In 2006, the first summit of this format in Kiev decided to declare GUAM an international organization with a new title: "Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM".
