Scientists from Sweden created new antibody to fight cancer

By Alimat Aliyeva

Scientists from Uppsala University and the Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) have created a new antibody that enhances the effect of T cells on a cancerous tumor, Azernews reports.

Scientists have developed a unique type of antibody, which is a "three-in-one construct" that simultaneously targets drug delivery and immune system activation. This innovative development is aimed at personalized cancer immunotherapy.

The drug redirects the immune system to search for and destroy neoantigens, specific mutations found only in cancer cells. A new type of antibody delivers tumor-oriented material directly to certain immune cells, while stimulating them. This significantly enhances the T-cell response to cancer, the study notes.

Preliminary experiments have confirmed the effectiveness of the method: it activates the necessary immune cells in human blood samples, and also demonstrates positive results in animal studies. Mice that received the drug in low doses had an increased life expectancy. The introduction of more antibodies cured the animals of cancer.

It is noted that this method also turned out to be safer compared to previously studied methods of therapy.

The drug consists of two parts: a targeted bispecific antibody that can be produced in large quantities in advance, and a special peptide part that is synthesized quickly and on a small scale for a specific type of cancer. This combination reduces production costs and accelerates the adaptation of therapy, providing a faster transition from diagnosis to treatment for patients.
