11 ethnic Armenian climbers make illegal hike in Turkey
ANKARA - 11 ethnic Armenian rock-climbers have reportedly surmounted the Agri Daghi Mountain in Turkey. The climbers are said to have crossed into the country through Georgia’s territory and made the climb without prior authorization from the Turkish government.
Armenia’s Asbarez website claimed that the group ascended to Agridaghi, which is referred to by the Armenians as Ararat, and hoisted the flags of Armenia and the self-proclaimed Nagorno Karabakh republic run by ethnic Armenians in the Azerbaijani region.
The group, consisting of nine citizens of the United States and two Canadian nationals, crossed the Turkish border with ease and saw only "sincere" attitude from Turkish border guards, Asbarez reported.
The climbers had asked Turkey’s tourism ministry to authorize their ascent, but the request was declined. They ascended the mountain nonetheless.
