Turkmen officials to talk energy in Tehran

23 July 2010 13:15 (UTC+04:00)

TEHRAN – Turkmen government delegation is expected to visit Iran on Saturday to continue talks on bilateral energy cooperation, Tehran based FARS news agency reports.

The delegation, headed by Deputy Chairman of Turkmenistan's Cabinet of Ministers for International Relations Rasit Meredow, will arrive in Tehran at the invitation of Oil Minister Masoud Mir-Kazzemi.

Iranian Ambassador to Ashgabat Mohammad Mousa Hashemi Golpayegani said that the Turkmen president initiated the visit following Mir-Kazzemi's recent trip to the Central Asian country.

"The delegation will study the new proposals on broadening of the bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, particularly, in oil and gas," Hashemi Golpayegani added.

In the wake of the looming world sanctions, Iran has been exerting efforts to boost political, economic, energy and cultural cooperation with the regional and neighboring countries, especially those in the Central Asia.

Iran’s Oil Minister Masoud Mir-Kazzemi met with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow in Ashgabat in June to mull the prospects of bilateral energy cooperation.

In a ceremony attended by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in January 2010, Iran and Turkmenistan inaugurated the second pipeline to transport gas from Turkmenistan to Iran.

Turkmenistan had agreed to boost the volume of its natural gas exports to Iran to 14bn cubic meters (bcm) from the current 8 bcm, following the start of operation of the new gas pipeline between the two countries.
