Armenia calls on PACE to recognize 1915 ‘genocide’
Armenia has called on the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of
Europe (PACE) to recognize the 1915 alleged mass killings of their
ancestors in Ottoman Turkey as "genocide". The demand was stated in
an appeal filed by the country’s delegation to the assembly.
Armenian media reported that, in addition to five members of the Armenian delegation, the written appeal was joined by 21 PACE representatives. The co-signatories reportedly include lawmakers representing Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Bulgaria, Austria and Britain.
According to historians, Armenians had begun an uprising in Turkey from 1915 to 1923 and further assisted Russia, one of Turkey’s enemies in World War I. The Ottoman Empire then decided to resettle the Armenians. The latter claim that their predecessors were subjected to genocide in the process, while Ankara rejects the allegations and has offered to research the events through a joint commission of historians. Armenians have achieved recognition of the alleged genocide in several countries’ parliaments.*
