Armenia plans to open consulate in Iranian city
The government of Iran, which has offered to broker settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, is expanding its relations with Armenia.
According to the GunAzTV channel, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Qashqavi has said preliminary agreement had been reached on opening an Armenian consulate in Tabriz.
Yerevan believes that opening a diplomatic representation in the Iranian city will provide grounds for expanding its relations with Tehran.
The two countries held talks on the issue in December 2007. Following those discussions, a mass influx of Armenians to Iran began, and the suitable conditions provided by the Iranian authorities are said to be one of the main reasons for the tendency.*
