Turkey hopes to settle ties with Armenia ‘in weeks’
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said Turkey hopes to settle its strained relations with Armenia in the coming weeks.
Addressing a news conference in Ankara, Davutoglu did not directly refer to the topics to be discussed during Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s meeting with Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian, due in Washington April 12-13, but said the outstanding differences between the two countries would be eliminated soon.
Armenia and Turkey have been at odds for decades. In a bid to end the long-standing hostility, the two governments signed protocols in Zurich in October 2009 to establish diplomatic relations and reopen their borders. However, the documents require parliamentary approval, and Ankara has ruled out normalization with Yerevan until progress is made in resolving the conflict between Armenia, which occupies part of Azerbaijani territory, and Azerbaijan, Turkey’s ally.*
