Armenia aims at Nabucco project
Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian has said he does not
rule out Yerevan’s participation in the Nabucco pipeline project,
which seeks to pump Caspian and Central Asian gas to European
markets bypassing Russia.
"We consider that all regional projects, especially economic ones, should involve all countries of the region and not exclude anyone," he said in an interview with Deutsche Welle.
As for Armenia’s desire to be one of the transit countries for such a gas pipeline, Nalbandian said his country is ready to partake in the projects connected with energy resources.
"Such projects should be realistic and meet the interests of the region. We wouldn’t want to see them politicized," Nalbandian said, adding that such projects should be economically efficient.
Referring to Armenia’s position on the Russian-Georgian conflict, the minister said Yerevan maintains a strategic alliance with Russia and the relations of good neighbors with Georgia.
"Therefore, we have definite obligations both as a strategic ally of Russia and a good neighbor of Georgia. And along with Georgia, we are the country that is interested in the stability and security of Georgia more than others in the region and the world. This is why Armenia plays the role of a moderator in the relations between Russia and Georgia," Nalbandian said.*
