Georgian move to up tension with Armenia
Tensions may rise between Georgia and Armenia after Tbilisi
informed Yerevan it would cancel the concessions applied for the
Armenian Railway company since March 1.
After the measure goes into affect, Armenia will be deprived of the 17% concession for the transportation of heavy cargo and the 22% break on that of liquid and dry consignments through the neighboring South Caucasus republic's territory.
Tbilisi explained the move by the transfer of the Armenian Railway to the management of the Russian Railways company.
Georgia and Russia have been facing tensions due to Tbilisi's Western-leaning stance.
In April 2007, Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian thanked the Georgian side for the concessions.
He also said Yerevan hoped for more breaks, but it now appears that the neighboring country not only rejected the request but also moved to cancel the advantageous terms of transportation.
Georgia is currently the only overland access of Armenia to the rest of the world.
