Turkmenistan begins creation of Caspian naval force
Turkmenistan’s government has begun creating its military naval forces in the Caspian Sea. The establishment of the forces’ marine command, which will operate under the country’s Defense Ministry, is to be completed by 2015, the Turkmen state news agency reported.
President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has said while addressing the National Security Committee that the Naval Force will help to safeguard the Central Asian state’s benefits pertaining to the basin.
Turkmenistan currently runs no armed units in the Caspian. Its marine security is being provided by the coast guard command.
The five Caspian littoral states - Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Iran - have been divided for many years on the legal status of the Caspian, which is a source of huge hydrocarbon reserves.*
