Armenian paper editor gets seven years in jail
An Armenian opposition newspaper editor has been reportedly convicted to seven years in prison.
Nikol Pashinyan, the editor of Aykakan Jamanak newspaper, was handed down the jail term on charges of orchestrating stand-off between the opposition and riot police during mass protests in March 2008, Armenia Today news agency reported.
The defense has labeled the arrest as "ordered."
Violent clashes followed the country’s presidential elections. The opposition had refused to recognize the outcome of the election, taking to the streets. Scores of people were killed and injured during the cruel putdown of the protests.*
