Turkey ‘doing its utmost’ to ratify Armenia deal
The Turkish government is doing everything in its power to approve
in parliament the October 2009 agreement on mending its strained
relations with Armenia, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was quoted
by the local press as saying.
Davutoglu said in his address at the King’s College during a visit to London that Ankara was pursuing a policy aiming to defuse tension in the turbulent region.
"We want to create a region in which a car traveling from Baku will be able to safely head to Gars through Yerevan and Nakhchivan," he said.
Turkey and Armenia do not have diplomatic relations and the border between the two countries has been closed since 1993. Armenia's occupation of the territories of Azerbaijan, Turkey’s ally, and Yerevan’s claims on the 1915 genocide have been obstacles to normal relations between the two countries.
Davutoglu added that solving problems in the Caucasus region requires strengthening economic bonds among countries.*
