Erdogan’s Moscow visit agenda announced
Politcial issues including the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over
Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh that has remained unresolved for many
years will be on the agenda of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan’s visit to Russia, due to begin Tuesday. Discussions will
also center on the October 2009 agreement signed in Zurich by
Turkey and Armenia, following decades of hostility, to forge
diplomatic relations and reopen their shared border, Turkey’s
Haberturk newspaper reported. Erdogan’s visit to Moscow reportedly
has three objectives: establishing a high-level bilateral council
on strategic cooperation; giving an incentive to the OSCE Minsk
Group brokering settlement to the Garabagh conflict, and
facilitating resolution of the Cyprus problem.
The Turkish government has said in a statement that Turkish and
Russian officials will discuss ways of developing multi-faceted
partnership on the basis of good neighborhood relations. The
parties will mull regional issues and economic challenges facing
the two countries.
According to CNN Turk TV channel, cooperation on nuclear energy
will be high on the agenda as well.
Also, supplies of Russian gas to Turkey will be tabled in Moscow.
The two countries’ officials will discuss such energy projects as
construction of the Blue Stream 2 and South Stream gas pipelines,
as well as the planned Samsun-Ceyhan oil pipeline linking Turkey's
Black Sea and Mediterranean coasts, in which Russian energy majors
Transneft and Rosneft are seeking a 50 percent share. Erdogan and
his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, are reportedly expected to
discuss the future Nabucco gas pipeline project via Turkey, which
will allow European countries to diversify their energy supplies.
Ankara is seeking Moscow’s involvement in the project on building
the pipeline, which will bypass Russia.*
