Iranian diplomat resigns over crackdown on protesters: report
An Iranian diplomat at the embassy in Norway has
resigned in protest against Tehran's harsh treatment of
anti-government protesters, news reports said Wednesday, DPA
reported.
Mohammed Reza Heydari told broadcaster NRK that he had left the embassy and was considering contacting Norwegian authorities.
"My conscience did not allow me to stay on," he said.
Heydari had served in Oslo for three years. His wife and two sons were also reported to be in the Norwegian capital.
An Iranian embassy spokesman contacted by NRK declined comment.
The news is nothing more than a rumor circulated in the Western press in an effort to exert psychological pressure, the Mehr news agency reported referring to an Iranian Foreign Ministry' representative who spoke on condition of anonymity. There is no need to respond to such reports, the source added.
"The term of Heydari's diplomatic mission in Norway has come to an end," the source said. "After his return to Iran another diplomat will replace him."*
