Turkey to assume UN SC presidency in Sept.
Turkey will take over the UN Security Council rotating presidency in September 2010.
Turkey’s priorities for this year include effective conflict prevention, peacekeeping, United Nations reforms, combating terrorism, illegal migration and drug trafficking, as well as human rights, according to the UN website.
Ankara is offering a number of UN Security Council reforms to make it more democratic, considering that there needs to be a permanent and effective follow-up mechanism for the implementation of its resolutions in order to reinforce the credibility of the General Assembly, and thus the UN overall.
Turkey is a non-permanent member of the UN SC.
There are a total 192 countries in the United Nations. The UN SC is the most important decision-making body, with its five permanent members -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- each having veto power over its decisions.
The 10 non-permanent seats are filled by the General Assembly, with five countries elected each year to two-year non-renewable mandates. To secure a seat, a candidate nation has to win two-thirds of votes cast in a secret ballot.*
